What are varicose veins?

To better understand varicose veins, it’s helpful to step back and look at how the circulatory system in your legs works. The veins in your legs fight both distance and gravity when they deliver blood back to your heart. To help, they’re equipped with tiny valves that close off to prevent your blood from spilling backward. If these valves malfunction, your blood can pool, forming varicose veins and their less severe counterparts, spider veins.

While varicose veins aren’t necessarily dangerous, they can be a source of discomfort and lead to:

  • Ulcers
  • Throbbing pain or dull aches
  • A heavy feeling in your legs

  • Itching
  • Inflammation
What causes varicose veins?

The primary cause of varicose veins is venous insufficiency, which, as described above, is a problem in your blood vessels that interferes with their ability to return blood to your heart. Several factors can raise your risk for venous insufficiency, including:

Age: Blood vessels weaken with age.
Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose and spider veins
Pregnancy
Genetics
Carrying extra weight
Standing for long periods of time

Varicose and spider veins do not go away on their own, which is why you should see Dr. Kandra or Dr. Das for treatment.

How are varicose veins treated?

When it comes to varicose and spider veins, the doctors at Premier Spine & Pain Management use several approaches. To start, they may put you in compression stockings to help your blood flow more efficiently. If compression doesn’t work, they may turn to:

Sclerotherapy

A solution is injected into the vein to close it off, forcing your blood to reroute itself through healthier vessels.

Radiofrequency or Laser Therapy
Energy is delivered into the vein to heat it up and seal it off. The body then naturally eliminates the blood vessel.

Vein Removal
The problematic portion of the vein is sealed off and removed in one of two outpatient procedures: vein stripping and a phlebectomy.
