What are varicose veins?
To better understand varicose veins, it’s helpful to step back and look at how the circulatory system in your legs works. The veins in your legs fight both distance and gravity when they deliver blood back to your heart. To help, they’re equipped with tiny valves that close off to prevent your blood from spilling backward. If these valves malfunction, your blood can pool, forming varicose veins and their less severe counterparts, spider veins.
